Yes. Rugby is a very physical full-contact sport. There is minimal padding or protective gear and scrapes and bruises are a routine part of the game. Due to the nature of the sport, you do need to have health insurance to play or practice. Conversely, serious body injuries are fairly rare and are usually the result of poor technique or fitness level, something that our experienced coaches focus on. We know a lot about injury prevention and treatment and can address any injury with some sound advice.
Absolutely. Regardless of your size or weight there is a place for you on our team. Generally speaking, the forwards tend to be larger and do more of the tackling and rucking while the backs tend to be smaller and do more ball handling and open field running. Based on your skills and body type, we will find a position for you.
Yes girls can play rugby! Aspetuck Rugby is currently exploring the interest in creating a Girls team. Feel free to contact us and get in touch to be part of the 1st year of our Girls program. Who do Aspetuck play? Our youth teams are in a CT, NJ, NY league so games can be up to an hour away on one of the weekend days. The High School level team is a part of a CT competition so games are certainly closer to home. Transport is always available with other team members and really no trouble at all.Our High School team has also participated at the National tournament in the last few years due to our success, and the club is setup to continue this push. Is there equipment that I need? The basic gear consists of:1. A high quality mouth guard.2. Cleats (Any footwear without a toe cleat is fine – which can be either a rugby or soccer cleat – In time you may prefer to upgrade to a rugby boot which is specifically designed for the game. Cleats are only required for the field/turf, for indoor winter practices regular sneakers are required.3. And of course the appropriate clothing (we recommend rugby shorts, socks and practice jersey as regular T-shirts will end up getting ripped at practice). Certain players may also opt to invest in protective gear such as a scrum cap or shoulder protectors. Retailers such as www.rugbyimports.com are a good resource for rugby gear. The club will provide the official team socks for game days. Before each game, the coaches will present the team with their playing jerseys which are returned at the end of the game (they have positional numbers on them).
How much does it cost to play? Outside of the above mentioned equipment, the only other cost is player registration with Aspetuck. Club/player registration is $350 per player for U12, U14, and High School players. A family discount is given for each additional players. Club/player registration is $50 for U10 playersFinancial assistance is available and can be discreetly broached with the club president at [email protected] Is there life after Rugby?Rugby lives on beyond high school. Many, many colleges now offer rugby as a sport. Some are even giving rugby scholarships. There is a huge number of mens, and womens, rugby clubs across the country catering to players well into their 50’s. It is also a very international sport which can bond a player across continents.
